Westville War Memorial
Emanuel Hahn’s bronze grieving soldier monument at Westville, NS was completed in 1921. It was erected beside the town of Westville post office. A helmetless soldier stands at a battlefield grave – a simple wooden cross – the final resting place of a comrade killed in action.
Hahn’s Westville design for the company that employed him as its chief monument designer, the Thomson Monument Company of Toronto was eventually erected ten times, all the way to Fernie, British Columbia. Only two – Westville’s and a second at Cornwall, Ontario – would be in bronze; the others are all in granite. Smaller communities such as Springhill, Nova Scotia, and Killarney, Manitoba without the means to pay for a Hahn original could send off a photo of the Westville original to Italy, and have a copy made in Carrara marble at considerably less cost. Hahn’s grieving soldier was reiterated at least twenty times in Canadian communities.
This memorial was erected in honour of the local war dead of the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.
