The Founding of Ajax
In 1941, the Canadian Government established here a shell-filling plant operated by Defence Industries Limited. At peak production, over 9,000 persons from across Canada lived and worked on this site. The community was named for H.M.S. Ajax, the British cruiser that, with H.M.S. Exeter and H.M.S. Achilles, defeated the German pocket battleship “Graf Spree” in December 1939 at the Battle of the River Plate. After the Second World War, Ajax became a temporary campus of the University of Toronto for thousands of returning veterans. Under the administration of Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the community grew and industries were attracted. It became an Improvement District in 1950, and an incorporated town in 1954.

En 1941, le gouvernement du Canada a fondé ici une usine d’obus exploitée par Defence Industries Limited. Au plus fort de la production de cette usine, plus de 9 000 personnes de partout au Canada vivaient et travaillaient ici. Ajax tire son nom du croiseur britannique HMS Ajax qui, avec le HMS Exeter et le HMS Achilles, a vaincu le cuirassé de poche allemand Graf Spree en décembre 1939, à la bataille du Rio de la Plata. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Ajax est devenu le campus temporaire de l’Université de Toronto destiné aux anciens combattants de retour par milliers. L’administration par la Société canadienne d’hypothèques et de logement a favorisé la croissance d’Ajax et attiré les entreprises. Elle est devenue un district d’amélioration en 1950 et elle s’est constituée en municipalité en 1954.
