Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation Presbytery

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a priest’s residence built in 1908. The wooden building has an L-shaped plan and a two-storey elevation. It is topped with a steep straight gable roof complemented by a gable. A verandah runs along three sides and is surmounted by a balcony on the façade. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation presbytery is set back from the street on gently sloping grounds planted with mature trees. Together with the adjacent church and the cemetery, it forms the Catholic parish core, in the heart of the municipality of Montpellier.

The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation presbytery is based on its historical interest. It bears witness to the origins of the parish and the municipality of Montpellier. In 1892, Louis Beaulieu dit Montpellier opened a post office a few kilometres north of Ripon. The place became a mission of the parish of Chénéville in 1902. A few farms were established in this territory and forestry workers also settled there. A chapel was built between 1900 and 1905. It acquired the status of church upon the erection of the parish of Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation de Montpellier in 1907. From that time on, the locality’s economic and demographic growth was rapid. The establishment of several industries, including a sawmill, contributed to this change. In addition, the increase in tourism brought about by the many lakes in the vicinity accentuated this expansion. The presbytery, built in 1908, thus recalls an important period in the development of the place, which became the municipality of Montpellier in 1920.

The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation presbytery is also based on its architectural interest. It demonstrates the influence of industrial vernacular architecture on residential buildings of the early 20th century. Toward the end of the previous century, residential architecture became increasingly industrialized. The arrival on the market of prefabricated materials and elements and the dissemination of plans through catalogues helped popularize certain models. These were often inspired by the domestic architecture of the second half of the 19th century. Among them was the L-plan house. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation presbytery is a good example. Its two-storey elevation, its steep straight gable roof, the gable adorning its façade and the covered verandah running along three walls recall this building method. The regular arrangement of the openings and the cornice returns illustrate the persistence of principles and elements drawn from classically inspired architecture. The clapboard siding and the sheet-metal roofing, industrially produced at lower cost, bear witness to the popularity of these materials in domestic architecture at the turn of the 20th century. The presbytery is therefore a representative example of the forms and materials resulting from the industrialization of domestic architecture.

The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation presbytery also lies in its representativeness of this type of religious residence. In the parishes of Québec, the presbytery is essentially the home of the parish priest, an influential and respected figure representing the bishop and the Church. The ground floor serves public functions. It usually includes an office where parishioners are received. The upper floor is private in character. The large size of the presbytery recalls the building’s original function and its importance for the local Catholic community. Its location near the parish church and the cemetery makes it a landmark in the heart of the municipality.
