Lanthier House

Lanthier House, a classified historic monument, is a French-inspired dwelling erected around 1785. The square one-and-a-half-storey stone residence, with a raised foundation, is topped by a steep straight-pitched gable roof. An annex used as a summer kitchen, added around 1875, stands to the right of the main block. Lanthier House is located on large landscaped grounds forming Parc Héritage, in the Kirkland borough of the city of Montréal.

The heritage value of Lanthier House lies in its architectural interest. Erected around 1785, it is representative of the French-inspired rural house. This type stems from French know-how and models that were gradually adapted to the particular conditions of the country (climate, availability of materials) and to certain stylistic influences. This architectural tradition continued beyond the Conquest (1760). Lanthier House illustrates this type through its massive stone main block, its steep straight-pitched gable roof with shallow eaves, its stone end chimneys set in staggered positions and its asymmetrically arranged openings. The absence of roughcast and the raised foundation, reflecting the presence of a cellar, are features found more frequently in the Montréal region and neighbouring regions.

The heritage value of Lanthier House also lies in its ethnological interest. Certain architectural details bear witness to the activities of its former occupants. The presence of grain bins on the upper floor, for example, illustrates the use of the attic for storing crops. A summer kitchen was added to one of the gable walls of the main block around 1875. This small building generally housed the family during the warm season and served as a storage place in winter. The stone sink and the cellar door also tell us about the way rural houses were lived in during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The heritage value of Lanthier House also lies in its interest for the history of the Kirkland borough of the city of Montréal. It is one of the rare witnesses to the beginnings of settlement in this borough of Montréal, which developed in the 18th century. It also illustrates the former agricultural vocation of this inland area in the west of the island.

Maison Lanthier
