Joachim-Génus House
The Joachim-Génus house, classified in 1972, is a rural residence of French inspiration built in 1796. This wooden house, rectangular in plan and one and a half storeys high, is topped by a steep gable roof. It rests on high rubblestone foundations and has staggered stone chimneys. The designation includes the land and everything on it. The Joachim-Génus house is located in a municipal park on the shores of the baie de Vaudreuil (rivière des Outaouais), in the municipality of Vaudreuil-Dorion. It has a protection area.
The heritage value of the Joachim-Génus house lies in its architectural interest. The dwelling is representative of the house of French inspiration. This type derives from French know-how and models that were gradually adapted to the particular conditions of the country (climate, availability of materials) and to certain stylistic influences. Built in 1796, this house illustrates the type notably through its small piece-on-piece log block clad in vertical boards, its steep gable roof covered with cedar shingles, its asymmetrically placed openings, its staggered masonry chimneys and its lack of ornamentation. Moreover, the high rubblestone foundations reflect an adaptation to the environment, since the shores of the baie de Vaudreuil are subject to the seasonal flooding of the rivière des Outaouais.
