Jean-Baptiste-Simon-Allard House

The Jean-Baptiste-Simon-Allard house, a classified historic monument, is a residence built between 1807 and 1835. The stone dwelling, rectangular in plan and one and a half storeys high, is topped by a steep gable roof with flared eaves. It is located in the Lachenaie sector of the municipality of Terrebonne.

The heritage value of the Jean-Baptiste-Simon-Allard house lies in its architectural interest. Built between 1807 and 1835, the dwelling is a fine example of the transition between the French-inspired house of the 18th century and the Neoclassical-inspired Québec house of the 19th century. The low body of squared rubblestone, raised only slightly above the ground, the asymmetrical arrangement of the openings, the complex roof framing and the small-paned windows are characteristic of the 18th-century house, while the flared eaves of the gable roof and the cut-stone quoins of the façade belong rather to the 19th-century house.

The heritage value of the Jean-Baptiste-Simon-Allard house also lies in its representativeness as an illustration of the so-called “historical” restoration approach practised in the 1970s. The owners took care to restore the residence to its early 19th-century appearance, both inside and out. Examples include the built-in cupboards in the basement and the main fireplace on the ground floor, with its monumental hearth.

Maison Jean-Baptiste-Simon-Allard
