Hôtel Klondike

The Hôtel Klondike, a cited historic monument, is a former “boomtown”-type commercial building constructed in the 1880s. This rectangular two-storey wooden building is topped with a flat roof sloping slightly toward the rear. A covered gallery spans the full width of the façade on the second storey. The Hôtel Klondike stands along the public road. It is located in a residential neighbourhood, midway between the former village core and the rivière des Outaouais, in the Aylmer sector of the city of Gatineau.

The heritage value of the Hôtel Klondike lies in its architectural interest. It belongs to the “boomtown” architectural current. The model was common in Québec towns from the late 19th century. It was designed to meet urgent housing needs in working-class areas. “Boomtown” architecture is distinguished notably by the speed of its construction and the plainness of its ornamentation. The Hôtel Klondike is characteristic of this type of architecture through its two-storey elevation, its flat roof sloping slightly toward the rear and its parapets. A modest moulded cornice was added at the top of the façade of the clapboard-clad building. The hotel function, however, called for a larger space. The building therefore has a rectangular plan twice the usual width of a private dwelling. The hotel has another distinctive feature: a squared-log (pièce sur pièce) frame. This way of building continues the practice of earlier periods. The main façade includes an upper-storey gallery sheltered by eaves, with a balustrade punctuated by ornate posts and decorative brackets. The Hôtel Klondike bears witness to the persistence of tradition. It also demonstrates the adaptation of an architectural type to meet the needs of a specific function.

The heritage value of the Hôtel Klondike also lies in the interest of its siting. This type of commercial building is generally located along the public road. The Hôtel Klondike stands directly on rue du Couvent, a thoroughfare laid out around the middle of the 19th century. This proximity to the street, which serves the building’s function, led to the construction of the upper-storey gallery. The Hôtel Klondike is located midway between the rivière des Outaouais and Aylmer’s former village core. The commercial building thus stands out from the surrounding residential buildings, which usually have a greater setback from the street.
