Gamache Manor
Gamache Manor, classified in 1959, is a one-and-a-half-storey rectangular stone ancestral home capped with a steep, straight-pitched roof with shallow eaves. The first main block was built in 1744 and lengthened at the end of the 18th century. Gamache Manor stands on a vast landscaped lot in the heart of the municipality of Cap-Saint-Ignace.
The heritage value of Gamache Manor lies in its representativeness of a type of residential architecture of the French Regime. With its imposing main block, Gamache Manor is a characteristic example of the 18th-century French-inspired Québec rural house. This type results from the transmission of the traditional know-how of the first craftsmen who came to the colony in the previous century and from adaptation to the particular conditions of the country with regard to the availability of materials and the climate. It is expressed here in the massive, low main block, the steep roof with short eaves and the small, asymmetrically distributed openings. Also noteworthy is the addition of Neoclassical decorative elements, including the doorway with an entablature and fluted pilasters with capitals.
The heritage value of Gamache Manor also lies in its age. Built in 1744, it is one of the oldest buildings in the municipality and the region. Since some of the buildings of the Côte-du-Sud were burned during the British Conquest (1759-1760), few structures predating that period survive.
Manoir Gamache
