Freligh Mill

The Freligh mill, a classified historic monument, is a watermill built in 1839. The large building consists of a rectangular two-and-a-half-storey stone main block topped by a gable roof surmounted by a wooden silo, and a two-storey wooden annex on piles set at a right angle at the rear. The building is surrounded by a protection area. The Freligh mill stands on the bank of the rivière aux Brochets, in the heart of the municipality of Frelighsburg.

The heritage value of the Freligh mill lies in its architectural interest. The building was erected in 1839, when the population of the village of Frelighsburg, in the Eastern Townships, consisted mainly of Loyalists, New England settlers who had remained loyal to the British Crown and came to settle in Canada after the American War of Independence (1776-1783). Like several buildings in this part of Québec, the Freligh mill illustrates the architectural influence of the former southern colony through certain Neoclassical details, including the cornice returns of the gables and the small-paned sash windows. The building has 20th-century additions, such as the wooden annex (1912) and the silo (1930), which have little effect on its architectural integrity.

The heritage value of the Freligh mill also lies in its historical interest. Frelighsburg, like many towns and villages that emerged in the 19th century outside the seigneurial area, was organized around a limited number of community facilities, among which the mill held a predominant place. The settlement thus developed around the first watermill, built in 1790, which was replaced in 1839 by the present mill. This is not a banal mill like those that existed under the seigneurial monopoly, but rather a private enterprise run by an individual offering services to the community. The mill was used for several activities requiring a certain degree of mechanization, such as grinding grain, carding and fulling wool and sawing wood. In operation for nearly 125 years, this mill stimulated the development of the municipality and recalls the Freligh family, which owned it for several decades. Moreover, it is one of the oldest witnesses to the history of the present municipality of Frelighsburg.

Moulin Freligh
