Convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne (16 115)
The convent of the Sœurs de Sainte-Anne (Sisters of Saint Anne), a cited historic monument, is a Neoclassical stone institutional building constructed in 1906. Rectangular in plan and topped by a flat roof, it has four storeys resting on a raised basement. This complex, located between boulevard Gouin and the Rivière des Prairies on a small wooded lot next to Sainte-Geneviève Church, is part of the L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève-Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue borough of the city of Montréal.
The heritage value of the convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne lies in its representativeness of a building type, the convent building of the turn of the 20th century. These convents are generally rectangular buildings of stone or brick, topped by a flat roof, rising two or three storeys. The convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne, somewhat taller, rises four storeys – the top one an attic storey – resting on a high basement. It echoes Sainte-Geneviève Church, located immediately to the northwest, by using the same material (limestone) and a similar Neoclassical architectural language, albeit more modestly. In the case of this convent, Neoclassicism is expressed notably in the limestone laid so as to differentiate the storeys and the basement, the symmetry of the openings, the central portico emphasized by a triangular pediment, the dentilled cornice, the high basement and the attic storey. The convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne is a fine example of the convents built by religious congregations at the turn of the 20th century.
The heritage value of the convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne also lies in the building’s relationship with its surroundings. Together with Sainte-Geneviève Church and its presbytery, the convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne forms a remarkably well-preserved institutional complex. From the first decades of the 19th century, the villages of Lower Canada were organized around a limited number of religious or community buildings. The institutional complex of which the convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne is part is an example of this and is an important landmark in the heart of the village core of Sainte-Geneviève.
The heritage value of the convent also lies in its historical importance. This importance is twofold. On the one hand, for the former municipality of Sainte-Geneviève, the convent recalls the continuity of a use and of a religious presence dating back to 1851. The commitment of the nuns of the Congrégation des Sœurs de Sainte-Anne to teaching enabled the girls of the region to receive a quality education and to take a greater part in the growth of the community. On the other hand, the convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne is the first mission of this important congregation, founded in 1850 in Vaudreuil, which spread throughout Québec, to British Columbia and abroad. The convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne is therefore of interest for the history of this community, while also being a witness to the history of the former municipality of Sainte-Geneviève.
