Christin-Dit-Saint-Amour House

Christin-Dit-Saint-Amour House, a classified historic monument, is a French-inspired rural residence built around 1732. The stone building, almost square in plan and one and a half storeys high, is topped by a steep gable roof with straight slopes and flanked by wide chimney stacks, one on the ridge line and the other on the rear slope. Christin-Dit-Saint-Amour House stands on a large landscaped lot, set back from the public road, near the rivière des Prairies, in the Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles borough of the city of Montréal. It is surrounded by a protection area.

The heritage value of Christin-Dit-Saint-Amour House lies in its representativeness as a French-inspired rural house. This type stems from French know-how and models that were gradually adapted to the particular conditions of the country (climate, availability of materials) and to certain stylistic influences. Erected around 1732, Christin-Dit-Saint-Amour House illustrates it through its stone masonry, its gable roof with straight slopes and slightly projecting eaves, its chimneys set in the gable walls and its asymmetrically arranged openings. The absence of roughcast and the exposed foundation, reflecting the presence of a cellar, are features frequently found in the Montréal region and neighbouring regions.

The heritage value of Christin-Dit-Saint-Amour House also lies in its age. At the time of its construction, the residence was located near the village core of the fief of Rivière-des-Prairies. Granted by the Sulpicians in 1671, this fief developed slowly because of the Iroquois threat. The territory was therefore settled mainly at the beginning of the following century. Christin-Dit-Saint-Amour House, built around 1732, is thus one of the oldest residences in the area and one of the last witnesses to the former fief.

Maison Christin-Dit-Saint-Amour
