Charnel House
The charnel house, a cited historic monument, is a funerary building constructed around 1898. The small structure has a rectangular, one-storey plan and is topped by a jerkinhead roof. The charnel house stands at the entrance to the parish cemetery, on open, gently sloping ground, in the municipality of Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover.
The heritage value of the charnel house lies in its ethnological interest. The monument bears witness to the practices surrounding the burial of the dead in Québec. In the Middle Ages, the word “charnier” referred to the covered galleries surrounding cemeteries. Today, a charnel house is a building intended to hold coffins during the cold season. Because the frozen ground made burial impossible, such structures were erected in many parish cemeteries. The Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover charnel house recalls this old practice, which is still in use in several cemeteries in the province.
The heritage value of the charnel house also lies in its representativeness of a type of funerary building, namely the charnel house. These structures are usually small, with a rectangular plan and a single storey. The most common model has a straight-pitched gable roof, an entrance door in one of the gable walls and three blind walls. Built in 1898, the Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover charnel house recalls this type of building through its volume, its single opening and its squared-stone masonry, identical to that of the nearby Saint-Cyrille church. It is also adorned with a cross on its ridge that evokes its religious function. However, it differs from the common model by its jerkinhead roof.
The heritage value of the charnel house also lies in the interest of its setting. The building is part of a parish complex that also includes the Saint-Cyrille church and presbytery, the sexton’s house and the barn-stable, four cited historic monuments. The charnel house is an important element of this religious core, which forms the heart of the municipality.
Charnier
