Bord-du-Lac Wayside Cross

The Bord-du-Lac wayside cross, a cited historic monument, is a Catholic place of popular worship. Erected in 1923, this chamfered wooden cross consists of a shaft and a crossbar ending in fleuron decorations. Its figurative elements include the hammer, the nails, the lance, the ladder, the crowned bleeding heart surrounded by a radiant sun, and the niche housing a statuette of the Virgin. Standing in a rural setting along a road on private property, the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross is located in the L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève-Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue borough of the city of Montréal, in the same area as the montée Wilson wayside cross, also a cited historic monument.

The heritage value of the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross lies in its ethnological interest. The first wayside crosses appeared in Québec with the construction of the chemin du Roi between Québec and Montréal. They then continued to spread as roads were opened into the hinterland. Wayside crosses recall old practices that bear witness to popular religion. It was at the foot of the wayside cross, which sometimes served as a substitute for the church in the rangs, that French-speaking Catholics performed their devotions, notably during the month of Mary and the novena to Saint Anne in July, recited evening prayers, and asked for a special favour or the protection of their crops. The niche added at the bottom of the shaft, housing a statuette of the Virgin, is intended to receive the prayers and requests of the faithful. Most of the time, it holds a statuette of the Virgin Mary. She is sometimes replaced by the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Saint Joseph or another saint. Still evoking these old practices today, the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross bears witness to the popular religion of Quebecers and is thus a significant element of Québec’s religious heritage.

The heritage value of the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross also lies in its representativeness of crosses bearing the instruments of the Passion. Marking the territory with signs of the sacred, wayside crosses fall into three main types: plain crosses, crosses bearing the instruments of the Passion, and calvaries displaying the body of Christ. Crosses bearing the instruments of the Passion were often made by a craftsman. They are found more frequently in the large agricultural regions, such as north of Montréal, in Montérégie and in southern Québec. Bearing the instruments of the Passion, the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross is thus representative of this type of wayside cross. Like the montée Wilson wayside cross, the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross is one of the last surviving examples of crosses bearing the instruments of the Passion in the Montréal region.

The heritage value of the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross also lies in its symbolic interest. Regarded as the arms of Christ, the instruments of the Passion that appear at the centre, on the shaft and on the crossbar of the cross are motifs taken from the Gospels, which popular tradition appropriated and interpreted through symbols in order to depict the torment of Jesus Christ on the cross. The use of these symbols in fact dates back to the early days of Christianity, when Christians preferred to represent Christ by symbolic figuration rather than in human form, to avoid persecution by the Roman state. In the case of the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross, the hammer, the nails and the lance evoke the torment of Jesus on the cross, while the ladder recalls the lowering of his body to the ground for burial. The crowned bleeding heart personifies Christ as King of the Jews and bears witness to the gift of his life to redeem the sins of humankind. The radiant sun surrounding the heart recalls here that, at about three o’clock in the afternoon, the sun was darkened and the earth was covered in darkness. All these figurative elements of the Bord-du-Lac wayside cross thus carry this rich symbolism evoking the Passion of Christ.
