Antoine-Lacombe House

The Antoine-Lacombe house, classified in 1968, is a Neoclassical-inspired dwelling built around 1840. The stone residence, rectangular in plan and one and a half storeys high, is topped by a gable roof with flared, extended eaves. The Antoine-Lacombe house is located on grounds enhanced by gardens, in the municipality of Saint-Charles-Borromée, near Joliette. It is surrounded by a protection area.

The heritage value of the Antoine-Lacombe house lies in its architectural interest. Built around 1840, the residence is representative of the Neoclassical-inspired Québec house. It illustrates this movement, introduced at the beginning of the 19th century, through its main body raised above the ground, the symmetrical composition of its façade, the size and number of its openings and its gable roof with flared, extended eaves.

The heritage value of the Antoine-Lacombe house also lies in the renown of one of its occupants. Businessman Édouard Scallon (1813-1864) lived there between 1849 and 1862. An entrepreneur and timber merchant, Scallon had, among other things, a sawmill and a triple-purpose mill (wood, flour and flax) built along the rivière L’Assomption. He is considered one of the most important contributors to the economic growth of Joliette and its surroundings in the 19th century.
