48 Rue Van Vliet

The house at 48, rue Van Vliet, a cited historic monument, is a Neoclassical-inspired rural residence dating from the first half of the 19th century. The rectangular stone dwelling, two and a half storeys high, is topped by a gable roof. A full-width gallery across the façade continues along the left gable wall. A wooden annex is set at a right angle behind the main body of the house. The house at 48, rue Van Vliet stands on a landscaped lot in the municipality of Lacolle.

The heritage value of the house at 48, rue Van Vliet lies in its architectural interest. It is a representative example of Neoclassical architecture adapted to Québec’s own building methods. Following the American War of Independence, many settlers loyal to Great Britain emigrated, notably to the south of the “province of Quebec.” There they spread a simplified version of 18th-century English and American Georgian residential architecture. In Québec, this type of dwelling retained only the main elements. The Haut-Richelieu region, particularly its southern part, saw the development of a regional version of this architecture during the first half of the 19th century. These are grey-stone farmhouses showing great concern for symmetry, notably in the arrangement of the openings, always evenly spaced. The house at 48, rue Van Vliet is characteristic of this type with its two and a half storeys of squared grey-stone masonry built without batter, its symmetrically arranged openings and its two gables with cornice returns. The prosperity of the owner-builder is seen notably in the central openings of the façade, the entrance door and the second-floor window, which are topped by glazed transoms and flanked by sidelights. The simplicity of the casings, limited to the fixed frames, and of the brick chimney stacks reflects the building tradition. Many Neoclassical houses in the Haut-Richelieu were later enhanced with joinery or carpentry elements. This is the case of the gallery, which was probably added after the construction of the Lacolle house.

48, rue Van Vliet
