Saint-James Chapel

Saint-James Chapel, a cited historic monument, is an Anglican place of worship built in 1889 and 1890. This wooden building rests on a high stone base. It consists of a rectangular nave ending in a projecting choir with a flat east end. The straight gable roof is topped by a bell tower surmounting the ridge at the façade. The façade includes a rectangular porch and an oculus in the upper part of the gable. The designation includes the lot. The chapel stands on a large, sloping wooded lot in the municipality of Lac-Beauport. Built on a natural promontory, it dominates the landscape.

The heritage value of Saint-James Chapel lies in its architectural interest. The building is a representative example of the architecture of Québec’s Anglican chapels in the 19th century. Built by a local carpenter, the chapel has a simple architecture inspired by the rural churches of the Gothic period of the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, the Gothic Revival style was highly prized by Protestant religious communities, as it was considered better suited to their conception of religion. Saint-James Chapel bears witness to the influence of this architecture notably through its rectangular plan, its pointed-arch openings, its steep gable roof surmounted by a bell tower at the façade and its buttresses. These elements accentuate the verticality of the building, thereby lifting the soul toward the heavenly Jerusalem. Saint-James Chapel is characteristic of small Anglican places of worship of Gothic Revival influence. It is built of plain, rustic materials, and its dimensions are small.

The heritage value of Saint-James Chapel also lies in its historical interest. The building bears witness to the settlement of the Lac-Beauport region by Anglo-Saxon communities in the 19th century. The area around lac Beauport, then called “Waterloo Settlement”, was settled from the 1820s. Indeed, English veterans of the Battle of Waterloo (1815) as well as Irish, English, Scottish and American immigrants settled there. The Saint-James Episcopal Anglican Church parish was founded in 1837, and a small chapel was built around 1840. From 1877, this place of worship was used as a school and municipal council hall. The present chapel was built in 1889 and 1890 near the old one. In recent decades, the Lac-Beauport region has seen a sharp decline in its English-speaking Protestant population. However, Saint-James Chapel is still used as a place of worship.

The heritage value of Saint-James Chapel further lies in its relationship with its surroundings. For Anglican parishioners, the choice of a site for the construction of a place of worship was of great importance. Like several Anglican chapels, Saint-James was built on a secluded site, in a natural setting conducive to contemplation. Moreover, it is a landmark in the landscape owing to its location on a natural promontory. The chapel thus dominates the surrounding area.

Chapelle Saint-James
