Saint-Agricole Chapel

Saint-Agricole Chapel, a cited historic monument, is a small Catholic place of worship built in 1860. The wooden chapel consists of a rectangular nave ending in a flat east end. The straight gable roof is topped by a bell tower surmounting the ridge at the façade. The façade includes a door with a semicircular transom surmounted by an oculus. Saint-Agricole Chapel is located along a rang road, in the heart of a valley, in the municipality of Saint-Raymond.

The heritage value of Saint-Agricole Chapel lies in its historical interest. The chapel, also known as the Petit Saguenay chapel, bears witness to the presence of a modest community of land clearers in Saint-Raymond in the 19th century. The region known as Petit Saguenay, mountainous and covered with dense forest, was settled from the early 1830s by Irish immigrants. Several of these immigrants were Catholic or converted to Catholicism. At the same time, French Canadians from L’Ancienne-Lorette settled nearby. The village church of Saint-Raymond was rather far from these two communities of Catholic settlers. In 1860, the parish priest had a chapel built to serve them at a location farther inland. He placed it under the patronage of Saint Agricola. At the turn of the 20th century, the Irish settlers gradually abandoned their land because of the poor quality of the soil, which proved unworkable. The French Canadians, settled farther south, wished to bring the chapel closer to their community. In 1904, it was therefore hauled by horses, without being dismantled, to its present location, about three kilometres south of its original site. Saint-Agricole Chapel recalls the settlement efforts in the Saint-Raymond region in the 19th century.

The heritage value of Saint-Agricole Chapel also lies in its architectural interest. It is representative of the architecture of rural Québec chapels in the 19th century. These chapels are characterized by their small rectangular volume, their gable roof and their simple façade surmounted by a small bell tower. The Saint-Raymond chapel also bears witness to the neoclassical influence on religious architecture in Québec in the 19th century. It includes, among other features, arched openings, cornice returns on the façade and an oculus in the upper part of the gable. Saint-Agricole Chapel, one of the oldest buildings in the municipality of Saint-Raymond, is in an excellent state of preservation.

Chapelle Saint-Agricole
