Pont-Rouge Institutional Complex

The Pont-Rouge Institutional Complex, a constituted heritage site, is a parish complex consisting of a church, a presbytery, a parish centre, a cemetery and a Marian grotto. The designation also includes the lots on which the buildings stand. The stone place of worship, built in 1868 and 1869 and enlarged in 1907, has a Latin-cross plan formed by a rectangular nave, a transept and a choir ending in a flat east end. The building is topped by a straight gable roof with a hip above the choir. A square sacristy backs onto the east end as an extension of the choir. The brick presbytery, built in 1917, is a square, two-and-a-half-storey cubic house topped by a truncated pavilion roof. A covered gallery surrounds the building on three sides. A rectangular annex backs onto the rear wall. The parish centre, built in 1949, has a rectangular, two-storey plan with a raised basement. It is topped by a false mansard roof. The cemetery, laid out behind the place of worship, consists of gently sloping ground dotted with funerary monuments. A wrought-iron gate frames the entrance. The institutional complex stands on landscaped grounds at the heart of an old sector of the city of Pont-Rouge.

The heritage value of the Pont-Rouge Institutional Complex lies in its historical interest. The complex bears witness to the development of the parish of Sainte-Jeanne and of the town of Pont-Rouge. As early as 1793, the first petitions requesting the creation of a parish in this territory were sent to the bishop. The inhabitants of the area won their case in 1867. They promptly had their place of worship and presbytery built from 1868 to 1870. These two buildings, together with a cemetery, quickly became the heart of the locality, around which the village took shape. The population continued to grow, and the territory of the parish of Sainte-Jeanne was enlarged several times. The church, now too small, had to be enlarged in 1907. The first priest’s house, having become outdated, was replaced in 1917 by the present building. Various cultural activities were set up for the local population. Around the mid-20th century, the Archdiocese asked each parish council (fabrique) to take charge of organizing recreation. It was in this context that the parish centre was built in 1949, intended to house film and theatre presentations, exhibitions, lectures and many courses for young people. The church, one of the oldest surviving in the Portneuf region, the presbytery, showing the prosperity of the parish in the early 20th century, the cemetery, recalling the names of the families who lived in the town, and the cultural centre, an illustration of the cultural vitality of the population, form an ensemble that bears witness to the history of Pont-Rouge.

The heritage value of the Pont-Rouge Institutional Complex also lies in its architectural interest. The buildings that make it up bear witness to the popularity of various architectural movements between the mid-19th century and the mid-20th century. The church recalls the modifications frequently made to places of worship over the decades to meet new needs and current tastes. The building originally had a rectangular plan and a neoclassical-inspired vocabulary marked notably by arched windows and oculi. In 1893, part of the façade, the bell towers and the pinnacles were rebuilt. The introduction of segmental arches and ornamentation drawn from various historical styles recalls the influence of eclecticism in religious architecture at that time. To enlarge the church, a transept was added and a new choir was built at the rear. These well-integrated additions create a harmonious whole. The presbytery, for its part, is representative of a type of residential architecture very widespread in the early 20th century, the cubic house. This model, commonly called the “Four Square House” in the United States, became known when domestic architecture was industrialized, following the arrival on the market of prefabricated materials and components available by catalogue. The cubic house became very popular owing to its simple, spacious volume. The presbytery displays all the characteristics of this model, including the square plan, the two-and-a-half-storey elevation, the pavilion roof and the covered gallery surmounted by a balcony on the façade. The parish centre, for its part, belongs to the functionalist movement that strongly influenced building design in the mid-20th century. Its simple volume, rectangular in plan with two storeys and a raised basement, made it possible to lay out rooms for various activities while reducing construction costs. The abundant fenestration also makes the building more functional. Its very restrained ornamentation, consisting of the contrast between different materials, the rhythm of the openings and square or linear motifs, is also typical of the architecture of that period.
