Marcoux Mill
The Marcoux Mill, a recognized historic monument, is a flour mill built between 1870 and 1872. The imposing rectangular, four-level stone building is topped by a straight gable roof. The Marcoux Mill is located on the bank of the Jacques-Cartier River, in the municipality of Pont-Rouge.
The heritage value of the Marcoux Mill lies in its community function. It was first built to grind the grain of farmers in Pont-Rouge and the immediate area. Following the decline of this traditional activity at the turn of the 20th century, it housed, for a few years after the First World War, a performance hall and a movie theatre. Later used as a warehouse and carpentry shop by the Domtar company, it regained its community vocation when it was restored, from 1974, by the Corporation du vieux moulin Marcoux. The local population was involved at every stage of this enhancement project. For example, the restoration was carried out with materials donated by local businesses and through volunteer work bees, illustrating the importance of the mill to the local community. The Marcoux Mill now houses an exhibition hall and a performance hall.
The heritage value of the Marcoux Mill also lies in its representativeness of a type of industrial building, the flour mill. Through its large, multi-level stone main building and its straight gable roof covered with cedar shingles, it reflects the architecture of the water mills built in the second half of the 19th century.
Moulin Marcoux
