Cemetery Chapel
The Cemetery Chapel, a cited historic monument, is a small Catholic place of worship built in 1915. The brick building, on a rubblestone foundation, consists of a rectangular nave ending in a five-sided apse. It is topped by a steep, straight gable roof. A small bell tower surmounts the centre of the ridge. The chapel is located in the middle of a Catholic cemetery with several mature trees, in the municipality of Saint-Raymond.
The heritage value of the Cemetery Chapel lies in its architectural interest. Built of brick, it stands out for the quality of its architecture. The chapel rises in the middle of the Catholic cemetery of Saint-Raymond. Small in size, it is characterized first by its rectangular nave ending in a five-sided apse and by its steep, straight gable roof. A small bell tower sits at the centre of the ridge. It consists of a belfry surmounted by a short spire crowned by a finial in the shape of a fleur-de-lys. A single-flight concrete staircase with metal pipe railings leads to the front steps. The chapel’s ornamentation draws on the Gothic Revival movement. On the façade, it notably includes a large cut-stone oculus filled with a wooden rose window radiating around a blind quatrefoil. It also includes pointed-arch openings. The chapel also has basement windows at foundation level aligned with the large windows. These are rectangular and have white-painted brick flat arches and cut-stone sills. Between the oculus and the doorway, a cut stone bearing the date “1915” is set into the brick masonry. Buttresses with cut-stone drip caps frame the façade and punctuate the long sides. The eaves are adorned with a moulded cornice. The decoration also includes the pinnacles surmounting the paired right-angled corner buttresses on the façade. These are crowned with finials identical to that of the bell tower. A cross with crocketed arms is placed at the apex of the gable. The roof, the small bell tower, the pinnacles, the carved ornaments and the eave mouldings are covered with galvanized sheet metal.
The heritage value of the Cemetery Chapel also lies in its association with Honoré Come Beaupré. He was the builder of the chapel, and he left his mark on the architectural heritage of Saint-Raymond between 1900 and 1960. This joiner took part, among other things, in the construction of the present parish church and of several other institutional buildings such as the presbytery, the Larue school, the hospital, the Notre-Dame and Chute-Panet rang schools and the first caisse populaire. He also took part in the construction of several private residences. The Cemetery Chapel is one of these notable achievements.
The heritage value of the Cemetery Chapel also lies in its representativeness of cemetery chapels. This type of place of worship is sometimes found in Catholic parish cemeteries in Québec. It often takes the appearance of a small church. A cemetery chapel can serve various functions, including those of a place of contemplation and of burial. The chapel in the Saint-Raymond cemetery is characteristic of this type through its parish-church appearance and its nave with an apsidal choir housing an altar.
