Saint-Matthew Church
Saint-Matthew Church, a cited historic monument, is an Anglican place of worship built from 1854 to 1856. The Gothic Revival-inspired stone building consists of a rectangular nave ending in a flat chevet and is topped by a gable roof. Set in one of the gable walls, the main façade is distinguished by its central bell tower ending in a spire. Saint-Matthew Church is located on raised ground, set back from the road, in the municipality of Stukely-Sud.
The heritage value of Saint-Matthew Church lies in its architectural interest. Built from 1854 to 1856, it bears witness to the widespread adoption of the Gothic Revival style for Anglican places of worship in Québec around the mid-19th century. This style advocates a return to medieval architecture. It appeared in England in the late 18th century, and the Anglican Church used it frequently after 1820. Gothic architecture was considered an expression of British identity, particularly suited to national institutions. Moreover, it was associated with Christianity, whereas classical forms originated in the pre-Christian era. Adopted by the Church of England, the Gothic Revival spread rapidly to Anglican communities in other countries, including Canada. In mid-19th-century rural Québec, elements drawn from the repertoire of Gothic architecture were often integrated into buildings of traditional design. Saint-Matthew Church illustrates this with its pointed-arch openings, its steeply pitched roof and its central bell tower. Saint-Matthew Church is a good example of the small rural Gothic Revival-inspired churches built in the mid-19th century.
The heritage value of Saint-Matthew Church also lies in its landscape interest. The building is located in a rural setting, set back from the street on a lightly wooded lot. The location of the place of worship on raised ground and its setting in an area containing other old buildings of some heritage interest enhance it. Saint-Matthew Church is therefore a landmark in the landscape, in an old part of the municipality of Stukely-Sud.
