Rivard-Dit-Lanouette House
The Rivard-Dit-Lanouette House, a classified historic monument, is a rural stone residence with a rectangular plan, one and a half storeys high, topped by a steep straight gable roof. French-inspired, it was built during the third quarter of the 18th century. It stands slightly set back from the old chemin du Roy, in an agricultural setting, at the eastern end of the village core of the municipality of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade.
The heritage value of the Rivard-Dit-Lanouette House lies in its representativeness. Like the French-inspired rural residences built in Québec in the 18th century, it is characterized by its massive, low main body set close to the ground and its steeply pitched roof.
The heritage value of the Rivard-Dit-Lanouette House also lies in its siting. It is located at the eastern end of the village core, slightly set back from the old chemin du Roy, on land adjoining the former seigneurial domain. This is one of the first lots granted in the seigneury of Sainte-Anne by its first seigneur, in 1669. It therefore evokes the seigneurial system, abolished in 1854. In this system, the granting of land to censitaires was the fundamental condition for obtaining a seigneury and one of the seigneur’s most important duties.
The heritage value of the Rivard-Dit-Lanouette House also rests on its remarkable state of preservation and authenticity, both inside and out. Inhabited first for nearly 150 years by the Rivard dit Lanouette family, then for 80 years by the Baribeau family, it has undergone only minor alterations over its two and a half centuries of existence.
Maison Rivard-Dit-Lanouette
