Former Saint-Léonard Convent

The former Saint-Léonard convent, cited as a historic monument, is a conventual building constructed in 1953. Rectangular in plan, the two-storey building is clad in asbestos shingles. It is topped by a straight-sided gable roof. A gallery and a storm porch are set against the rear wall. The former convent stands along the street, in the village core of the municipality of Saint-Léonard-de-Portneuf.

The heritage value of the former Saint-Léonard convent lies in its historical interest. It marks an important stage in the history of education in Saint-Léonard-de-Portneuf. In the early 1950s, the village parish priest noted that the small local schools were overcrowded. He expressed his wish to entrust the education of young people to a religious community. In 1953, the congregation of the Soeurs Servantes du Saint-Coeur-de-Marie agreed to come and teach in the municipality. The same year, the convent and a small collège were built. To meet a condition imposed by the nuns, the two buildings were connected by a covered passage. The sisters taught boys and girls from grade one to grade eight. By 1960, the collège had become too small to accommodate the growing number of pupils. A more spacious school, named Marie-du-Saint-Sacrement, was built that same year on a lot adjacent to the convent. A second covered passage was then built to connect the convent to the new building. Elementary pupils continued to attend the first collège; the new building served as a secondary school. In 1964, the centralization of schools led to the transfer of secondary pupils to Saint-Raymond. The Marie-du-Saint-Sacrement school then became an elementary school. The congregation remained in the convent until 1997. The former Saint-Léonard convent is a witness to this period of change in the field of education in Québec.

The heritage value of the former Saint-Léonard convent also lies in its architectural interest. The building bears witness to the persistence of classical forms in rural Québec institutional architecture in the 20th century. It indeed displays certain elements inherited from classicism, such as its symmetrical façade, its doorway flanked by pilasters and surmounted by an entablature, its cornice and the brackets placed under the ends of the roof. Its asbestos-shingle cladding was a material frequently used in rural areas at the time of its construction, for both residential and religious architecture. The convent’s small size is also suited to its village setting. Well preserved, the former convent has kept many of its original components. The first covered passage, which connected the building to the small collège, has given way to a gallery on the rear wall; the second passage still connects it to the former Marie-du-Saint-Sacrement school. The building thus bears witness to the adaptation of traditional models to the particular context of its construction.

The heritage value of the former Saint-Léonard convent further lies in the interest of its setting. Surrounded by the first collège and the former Marie-du-Saint-Sacrement school, the building also faces the parish church. It is thus an integral part of the institutional and village core and an essential element of the municipality’s built landscape.
