Saint-Alphonse Seminary

The Saint-Alphonse Seminary, a cited historic monument, is an educational institution erected in 1922. The brick building has a T-shaped plan and is three and a half storeys high, with a raised basement. The façade is divided into three parts separated by firewalls. Each part is surmounted by a lantern and has a gabled frontispiece. The building is topped by a hip roof. It is set along the public road. The seminary is connected to a monastery, behind the basilica, in the religious core of the town of Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré.

The heritage value of the Saint-Alphonse Seminary lies in its architectural interest. It is a representative example of the institutional buildings constructed in the first decades of the 20th century. These two- or three-storey buildings generally have a monumental, symmetrical façade and one or more lanterns. The Saint-Alphonse Seminary, erected in 1922, follows this model, notably through the organization of its façade with three frontispieces each surmounted by a gable and through its three lanterns. It also has a T-shaped plan and abundant fenestration. In addition, the seminary’s ornamentation adopts the vocabulary of different periods of Gothic architecture. Several elements attest to this, such as the pointed-arch openings, the finials, the oculi grouped in threes and the stone string courses. The building is also distinguished by its cross windows. The chapel, set perpendicular to the main body, has tall, narrow pointed-arch windows and buttresses, also demonstrating this influence. The Saint-Alphonse Seminary illustrates the persistent use of Gothic forms by religious communities in the early 20th century.

The heritage value of the Saint-Alphonse Seminary also lies in its historical interest. This institution was founded to train new Redemptorist priests and brothers. These religious have been responsible for the parish of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, the shrine and the pilgrimage sites since 1878. They therefore had the buildings needed by the community built near the shrine. The former educational institution is connected to the monastery and is located on the same grounds as the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré basilica. In addition to these properties, this large religious ensemble includes the other elements of the famous pilgrimage site, such as the Scala Santa, the Way of the Cross, the chapels, as well as the buildings of a few other religious communities. The location of the Saint-Alphonse Seminary in the heart of the institutional core illustrates the role and importance of the Redemptorist community in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré.
