Sacré-Coeur Historic Site
The Sacré-Coeur historic site, classified in 2001, is a Catholic institutional complex established from 1903 onward. It includes the Sacré-Coeur church, its presbytery and two religious monuments, one of them a Sacred Heart. The church, built from 1903 to 1905, is a Gothic Revival-influenced stone building. It has a Latin-cross plan consisting of a three-aisled nave, a transept and a projecting chancel ending in a canted apse. Its facade, framed by buttresses surmounted by pinnacles, has an imposing semi-engaged bell tower. It includes three pointed-arch portals in dressed stone. The sacristy, erected in 1919 and 1920, is attached to the apse, extending the chancel. The presbytery, built in 1918 and 1919, is a U-shaped, two-and-a-half-storey brick building topped by a straight-sided gable roof. The central section, which has a wide porch with pointed arcades, is framed by wings forming projecting sections. It is connected to the church by an annex at the rear. The church square, laid out in terraces, includes a Sacred Heart monument. The complex stands on a rocky promontory and overlooks the Bassin district, a former working-class sector of the Chicoutimi borough of the city of Saguenay.
The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur historic site lies in its historical interest. The complex bears witness to the presence and work of the Eudists in Chicoutimi. This congregation, founded in France in 1643, went into exile in Québec in 1903 to escape anticlericalism. It was given charge of the Apostolic Prefecture of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and was entrusted with Sacré-Coeur parish, erected in 1903. The parish served essentially workers living near the Compagnie de pulpe de Chicoutimi, in the Bassin district. Immediately upon their arrival, the Eudists had the church built. In 1904 they settled in a small hotel located at the foot of the hill on which it stands, until the construction of their presbytery in 1918 and 1919, which completed the institutional complex. The community served as parish priests of the parish until 1996.
The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur historic site also lies in the architectural interest of its buildings. The buildings forming the parish core were designed by two renowned architects. The church was built from 1903 to 1905 to plans by the architect René-Pamphile Lemay (1870-1915). Gothic Revival in influence, the facade is characterized by an imposing bell tower surmounted by a tall spire, pointed-arch portals and openings, and buttresses and pinnacles adorned with finials. A sacristy was added in 1919 and 1920 to plans by the architect Alfred Lamontagne (1883-1967). He also drew the plans for the nearby presbytery in 1918 and 1919. Its imposing size and treatment link it to the bourgeois houses of the same period. It is characterized by, among other things, brick cladding, a two-and-a-half-storey elevation, a stone foundation, side wings forming projecting sections, ornamented gabled dormers and a porch with pointed arcades. A solarium is attached at the side. The Sacré-Coeur church and its presbytery thus form a complex remarkable for its architectural quality.
The heritage value of the Sacré-Coeur historic site further lies in its siting. The parish complex stands on a rocky promontory called the Cran Chaud. It overlooks the Bassin district, a former working-class sector in the west of the borough. The church dominates the landscape and faces the Saint-François-Xavier cathedral, which stands in the institutional centre. Two religious monuments, one of them a Sacred Heart placed on the church square, complete the layout of the site. Developed near the rivière Chicoutimi, the site recalls the contribution of the Eudists to the former city of Chicoutimi.
