Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière Presbytery

The Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière presbytery, classified in 1969, is a one-and-a-half-storey wooden building with a rectangular plan, topped by a gable roof. Neoclassical in style, it was built in 1869. A two-storey secondary wing with a flat roof and a lean-to were added at the rear in 1925. The designation includes the residence and a large lot. The lot is screened at the rear by vegetation, and a view opens onto the surrounding mountains. The presbytery is located at the heart of an institutional core, near the Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church, in the city of Saguenay.

The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The residence bears witness to the evolution of the French-inspired traditional Québec house through the modification and addition of certain elements influenced by English Neoclassicism. Thus, the ground floor, traditionally at ground level, is raised; the openings are arranged symmetrically and regularly; the roof, less steep, acquires flared eaves; certain elements, such as the gallery, are added; and ornaments are borrowed from the Neoclassical decorative vocabulary, such as those adorning the central doorway and the dormers. In 1925, major additions were made, the most striking being the secondary wing at the rear. Among them, the side galleries and the balcony of the central dormer harmonize with the existing structure.
