Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière Church

The Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church, classified in 1969, is a Catholic place of worship erected from 1863 to 1865 and given a bell tower in 1871. The plan of this stone building consists of a single-aisle rectangular nave extended by a narrower chancel ending in a semicircular apse. Neoclassical in inspiration, its facade has three portals and features cornice returns at the base of the gable. A bell tower surmounts the front of the ridge of the slightly flared gable roof. The sacristy is attached to the apse, extending the chancel. Rectangular in plan and one and a half storeys high, it is topped by a slightly flared gable roof. The designation also includes the lot on which stand the presbytery, also classified, the cemetery and its calvary, a Sacred Heart monument and a commemorative monument. The Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church is located on a large wooded lot, at the heart of a former village core, in the Chicoutimi borough of the city of Saguenay.

The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church lies in its architectural interest. Built from 1863 to 1865, the place of worship is an example of the parish churches erected in rural areas in the 19th century. These churches followed the model of those built under the French Regime but were generally larger and had more openings on the facade. In addition, most of them included elements inspired by Neoclassical architecture, then in vogue in Québec. Built to plans by the architect Jean-Félix Langlais, the Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church shows its lineage from French Regime churches through its stone masonry, its rectangular plan without a transept, its bell tower placed at the front on the ridge, and its elevations. The facade is linked to Neoclassicism through its three round-arched portals, its Venetian window and the cornice returns suggesting a pediment. In addition, the sacristy is located in a building attached to the apse rather than in a space defined by a partition at the rear of the sanctuary, a practice that appeared at the end of the 18th century. The Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church is thus representative of mid-19th-century Québec churches.

The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church also lies in the interest of its interior. Executed from 1871 onward, the architectural decor reflects the influence of Neoclassicism on the interior design of churches in the mid-19th century. The Neoclassical current is illustrated notably by the false segmental vault punctuated by transverse arches, the round-arched windows, the Ionic pilasters of the chancel and its entablature continuing into the nave, and the general sobriety of the whole. In 1900, the workshop of Joseph Villeneuve (1865-1923), one of those forming the École de sculpture de Saint-Romuald, executed three altars, the churchwardens’ pew and probably the baldachin. These workshops, active for more than a century (from the 1870s to the 1970s), acquired a great reputation that even extended beyond Québec. In the Louis XV style, the baldachin is the centrepiece and showcases the high altar. It is, moreover, a rare element in rural churches. The church also contains paintings, including a pietà by Charles Gill (1871-1918) placed in the chancel.

The heritage value of the Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church also lies in its importance in the landscape. Distinctive components of the Québec landscape, churches are landmarks that signal the presence of the parish. They are the dominant features of Catholic parish complexes, which form the cores of villages. Located on a wooded lot, the Notre-Dame-de-Laterrière church is part of a remarkable ensemble consisting of the presbytery (also classified), the cemetery and its calvary, the Sacred Heart monument and the monument erected in memory of the Oblate father Jean-Baptiste Honorat (1799-1862), founder of the mission of Notre-Dame de Laterrière.
