Moulin-Paradis Heritage Site

The Moulin-Paradis heritage site, constituted in 2006, is a small pre-industrial complex dating from the second half of the 19th century. It is set in a natural depression beside a watercourse. The complex consists of a water-powered gristmill and a small blacksmith’s shop. The rectangular wooden mill, built in 1860 and 1861, has two storeys and is topped by a mansard roof. The blacksmith’s shop, beside the mill, is a small one-and-a-half-storey vertical-board building with a straight gable roof. Wooden footbridges give access to both buildings at attic level. The Moulin-Paradis heritage site is located in an agricultural zone of the municipality of Kamouraska, beside the rivière Kamouraska.

The heritage value of the Moulin-Paradis heritage site lies in its historical interest. The Paradis mill demonstrates the harnessing of the water power of the rivière Kamouraska. Use of the watercourse dates back to the 18th century with the construction of a mill further upstream. The construction of the Paradis mill, in 1860 and 1861, corresponds to an increase in the number of gristmills after the abolition of the seigneurial system in 1854. Local entrepreneurs took advantage of the water-power potential of the watercourses of the St. Lawrence Valley. They thus took part in regional economic development. Small pre-industrial complexes often included a water mill and a forge needed to maintain the hammers used to dress the mill’s millstones. These complexes then appeared along many rivers during the second half of the 19th century. The Moulin-Paradis heritage site is representative of the importance of the exploitation of watercourses in the history of the development of the Kamouraska region.

The heritage value of the Moulin-Paradis heritage site also lies in the architectural interest of its two buildings. The mill and the forge are representative of the architecture of the outbuildings that characterized the landscape of Québec’s agricultural regions in the 19th century. The Paradis mill is typical of the water mills built in the 19th century through its rectangular plan, its two storeys, its mansard roof pierced by several dormers and its small roof lantern. With its wood shingle siding, the mill resembles barns built during the same period. The mansard roof increases the storage space in the attic. The mill is nevertheless distinguished by its squared-log (pièce sur pièce) timber structure. The asymmetrical arrangement of the openings also recalls the building’s dual function as mill and residence. Moreover, the forge’s small size, its vertical board siding and its wood shingle roof give it the typical appearance of rural forges associated with mills. Only a few examples of such forges remain in the Bas-Saint-Laurent. The wooden footbridges giving access to the buildings at attic level show how the architecture was adapted to the topography. The Paradis mill and the blacksmith’s shop form a well-preserved architectural ensemble representative of Québec agricultural landscapes of the second half of the 19th century.

The heritage value of the Moulin-Paradis heritage site further lies in its ethnological interest. The site helps us understand certain aspects of the former way of life of millers in rural areas. The need to keep the mill running properly often led to the construction nearby of a dwelling for the miller and of buildings for making or maintaining tools and equipment. In this case, the miller’s dwelling is located in the east part of the mill. It also recalls the family character of these small pre-industrial businesses. Moreover, the presence of the forge near the mill evokes in particular the frequent need to sharpen and maintain the hammers used to dress the old millstones. The forge was used mainly for metalworking. The Paradis family has owned the mill for more than a hundred years. For several decades, it has run the interpretation centre that bears witness to life in gristmills. These were at the heart of rural life until the mid-20th century.
