L’Ange-Gardien Presbytery
The L’Ange-Gardien presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a religious residence dating from 1915. The brick building, square in plan and two and a half storeys high, is covered by a hipped (pavilion) roof. A gallery wraps around two sides of the building and a veranda runs along a side wall. A rectangular two-storey annex adjoins the rear. A second, smaller one is built against the west wall. The designation also includes the Sacred Heart monument standing on the west side of the building. The presbytery is set back from the road, on a slight rise in landscaped grounds with a view of the St. Lawrence River. Together with the parish church and the cemetery, the priest’s house and the monument form the religious core of the municipality of L’Ange-Gardien.
The heritage value of the L’Ange-Gardien presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The dwelling is representative of a type of residential architecture very widespread in the first half of the 20th century, namely the cubic house. This model, commonly called the “Four Square House” in the United States, appeared around 1890. Architectural catalogues then promoted its spread throughout North America. It quickly became very popular thanks to its simple and spacious volume. Either sober or elaborate ornamentation could be applied to it. The cubic house became known at the time when domestic architecture was becoming industrialized. Its appearance coincided with the arrival on the market of prefabricated materials and components available by catalogue. The versatile model was also adopted by certain architects. Built in 1915, the L’Ange-Gardien presbytery is a good example of the cubic house, notably through its square plan, its two-and-a-half-storey elevation, its hipped (pavilion) roof pierced by dormers and the covered gallery wrapping around two sides. Its careful ornamentation consists of elements borrowed from the classical vocabulary, notably the gallery columns and the modillioned cornice. It bears witness to the use of this residential architectural type on the Côte-de-Beaupré in the early 20th century.
The heritage value of the L’Ange-Gardien presbytery also lies in its representativeness of a type of building with a religious function, namely the presbytery. In Québec, the presbytery is a dwelling containing an office where the parish priest receives the faithful. The representative of the Church is an influential and respected figure in the parish. A first presbytery was built in L’Ange-Gardien in 1685. In 1841 and 1842, a second one replaced it. The present building dates from 1915. It is also representative of presbyteries through its location in an institutional complex comprising a church, a cemetery and a school. This complex is an essential component of the built landscape of L’Ange-Gardien. It is set back from the road, on a slight rise in landscaped grounds with a view of the St. Lawrence River.
The heritage value of the L’Ange-Gardien presbytery also lies in the ethnological interest of the Sacred Heart monument. It is a witness to devotion to the Sacred Heart, a religious practice once very widespread in Québec. The cult of the Sacred Heart was developed in the 17th century in France. This devotion, however, gained in importance after the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). France then placed its recovery under the aegis of the Sacred Heart. In Québec, Cardinal Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau (1820-1898) placed the ecclesiastical province of Québec under the protection of the Sacred Heart around 1875. A large artistic output then developed around this theme. Many parishes erected monuments representing the Sacred Heart near the parish church. The one standing near the L’Ange-Gardien presbytery is a good example, with its gilded statue representing Christ with open arms and a heart on his chest, placed on an imposing stone pedestal. The monument recalls this devotion, which continued well into the 20th century.
