Lac-de-l’Est Chapel

The Lac-de-l’Est chapel, a cited historic monument, is a small wooden building dating from 1926 that served as a school and a Catholic place of worship. Rectangular in plan, the one-and-a-half-storey chapel is topped by a straight gable roof. A bell tower surmounts the front of the ridge. The chapel stands beside the road, near lac de l’Est, in a rural, wooded area of the municipality of Mont-Carmel.

The heritage value of the Lac-de-l’Est chapel lies in its interest for the history of educational institutions. It illustrates one aspect of the history of education in Québec, that of range schools. The adoption of the Fabrique Schools Act (1824) and the Syndics Schools Act (1829) bears witness to the will to set up a Québec school system. It was not until after 1840, however, that this system came into being. Its beginnings were difficult, mainly because of opposition to school taxes. Range schools generally served a small rural area and grouped pupils of different grade levels in a single class. They belonged to school boards placed under the responsibility of commissioners. A Superintendent of Public Instruction managed the system as a whole. Following the creation of the Ministère de l’Éducation in 1964, the last range schools closed their doors in favour of the centralization of institutions in towns and villages. The Lac-de-l’Est chapel, built in 1926 and used as a school until 1946, is a witness to this school system, which left its mark on rural Québec.

The heritage value of the Lac-de-l’Est chapel also lies in its architectural interest. It is a representative example of the architecture of Québec’s rural school buildings. The school act of 1899 required commissioners to draw on standard plans distributed free of charge. The architect Elzéar Charest was the author of these plans. He opted for simple, vernacular-inspired architecture with abundant fenestration. The plans of the Department of Public Instruction thus profoundly influenced the architecture of 20th-century range schools, which are easily recognized in the Québec countryside. Commissioners could also have their own plans approved. The Lac-de-l’Est chapel shows the adaptation of a standard plan through its modest volume, its straight gable roof, its cedar shingle siding, its abundant fenestration and its plain ornamentation.

The heritage value of the Lac-de-l’Est chapel further lies in its historical interest. It bears witness to the intensification of settlement at Lac-de-l’Est following the development of local forest resources in the early 20th century. From 1894, the forest potential around lac de l’Est attracted several entrepreneurs who ran logging camps, mainly during the winter season. The territory was served by the parish priest of Mont-Carmel, who went there once a month. In 1925, the Fraser company of New Brunswick built a sawmill in the hamlet. This industry led to the establishment of a permanent population, which justified the erection of a chapel-school in 1926. The Lac-de-l’Est chapel is one of the oldest surviving buildings in this area and bears witness to the formation of the hamlet in the early 20th century.

The heritage value of the Lac-de-l’Est chapel also lies in its ethnological interest. It is representative of a type of institutional and religious building: the school-chapel. School-chapels were more common in colonization areas. The Lac-de-l’Est school-chapel illustrates the precarious economic situation of the fledgling hamlet, which could not then afford to build two separate buildings.
