Jean-Gagnon Calvary

The Jean-Gagnon calvary, a cited historic monument, is a religious ensemble of the Catholic tradition. The structure was erected between 1919 and 1923. It consists of a wooden shaft and crossbar bearing a sculpture in stone dust representing the crucified Christ. An inscription appears on the upper part of the shaft. The cross rests on a concrete base. The calvary is located near an intersection in the municipality of Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval.

The heritage value of the Jean-Gagnon calvary lies in its ethnological interest. It bears witness to the current of devotion to images of the suffering or dead Christ. The growing interest of the faithful in dramatic expressions of the Passion, the Crucifixion, the “Ecce homo” and the “Pietà” led to the erection of numerous outdoor calvaries from the end of the French Regime onward. From the 1850s, these often replaced simple wayside crosses or crosses bearing the instruments of the Passion. The Jean-Gagnon calvary is representative of the simplest form of these structures. It consists solely of a cross bearing a representation of the crucified Christ. This representation is characterized by Christ’s closed eyes, the “perizonium” he wears and the superimposed feet on the “suppedaneum.” Like other calvaries, this one recalls old Catholic practices. These sites are used for prayer and contemplation, notably during certain religious feasts. They may also be erected to ask for a special favour or to commemorate an event. The Jean-Gagnon calvary is therefore a significant element of Québec’s religious heritage.

Calvaire Jean-Gagnon
