Imbeau House
Imbeau House, classified in 1968, is a residence of French inspiration built in the first half of the 18th century and enlarged in the early 19th century. The rectangular stone residence, one and a half storeys high, is topped by a steep gable roof with straight slopes pierced at its centre by a large chimney stack. A recent lean-to abuts the east gable wall. Imbeau House occupies farmland and is surrounded by outbuildings. It is located in the municipality of Saint-François-de-l’Île-d’Orléans.
Imbeau House is included in the Île-d’Orléans historic district.
The heritage value of Imbeau House lies in its architectural interest. The residence is representative of the rural house of French inspiration. This type stems from French models and know-how, adapted to particular local conditions such as climate and the availability of materials. Imbeau House, built in the first half of the 18th century and enlarged in the early 19th century, illustrates it notably through its stone masonry main dwelling, its minimal clearance above the ground, its steep gable roof with straight slopes covered with cedar shingles, the asymmetrical arrangement of its openings and its small casement windows with small panes. In addition, the central position of the chimney is a feature frequently found in the Québec City region and neighbouring regions, often indicating a lengthening of the dwelling.
The heritage value of Imbeau House also lies in its ethnological interest. Some of its architectural elements reflect the way of living in the 18th and 19th centuries. The ground floor is divided by a stone wall that defines two living areas. The older east side has a bread oven whose heat flue connects with the hearth chimney. This arrangement, widespread in 18th-century domestic architecture, indicates the use of this room as a kitchen. The existence of an indoor dairy is indicated by a small window at the east end of the north façade. In addition, the miller’s stair in the east part recalls that the attic served as a granary and storage area. The presence of a box bed at this level, installed against the flue, nonetheless bears witness to the occupation of the attic after the enlargement. The interior layout of Imbeau House thus illustrates several aspects of the traditional way of life.
Maison Imbeau
