Gagnon House

The Gagnon House, classified in 1961, is a former stone farmhouse with a rectangular plan, one and a half storeys high, topped by a gable roof. It was built in two stages, probably during the first half of the 18th century. The property, which sits below the chemin Royal in the municipality of Sainte-Famille, is located within the Île-d’Orléans historic district.

The heritage value of the Gagnon House lies first in the preservation of original elements that make it possible to trace its architectural evolution. It was built in stages, as revealed by the two distinct types of roof framing. A first main building was erected before 1760; the residence was then extended to the west and the composition of the elevations was altered in the early 19th century. Many old properties on the île d’Orléans dating from the French Regime were thus enlarged over the course of their history.

The heritage value of the Gagnon House also lies in its architectural details, which reflect the Neoclassical influence of the 19th century. This influence, which affected residential architecture in the first half of the 19th century, can be seen in the central door, the bellcast eaves and the regular arrangement of the openings. In addition, two decorative chimney stacks were added at the ends of the roof to create an impression of symmetry.

Maison Gagnon
