Curé-Alexandre-Bouillon Mausoleum
The Curé-Alexandre-Bouillon mausoleum, a cited historic monument, is a small Catholic religious building constructed in 1950. The stone building consists of a nave on a rectangular plan with a flat chevet, topped with a straight gable roof. A slender spire surmounts the ridge. The Curé-Alexandre-Bouillon mausoleum is located in a Catholic cemetery overlooking Lac au Saumon, in the municipality of Lac-au-Saumon.
The heritage value of the mausoleum lies in its association with Alexandre Bouillon (1873-1943). He was an important figure in the history of Lac-au-Saumon, and his mortal remains are kept in the building. From his ordination as a Catholic priest in Rimouski in 1899, Bouillon looked after the Lac-au-Saumon mission. He settled there in 1907 when the parish of Saint-Edmond-de-Lac-au-Saumon was founded. The priest oversaw the religious organization, from the construction of the first church to the founding of schools and the establishment of the parish’s religious communities. His commitment to his community earned him the title of builder in the region. His faith and great simplicity also earned him everyone’s respect. Thus, at his death in 1943, the entire population mourned the passing of the churchman. He was first buried in the parish cemetery, and, in 1950, his remains were moved to a mausoleum built in his honour.
The heritage value of the Curé-Alexandre-Bouillon mausoleum also lies in its rarity. This type of commemorative monument dedicated to a parish priest is uncommon in the Matapédia Valley. The mausoleum was erected at the instigation of the parishioners of Lac-au-Saumon, members of the clergy and the religious community of the Servantes de Notre-Dame, Reine du Clergé. This type of monument belongs to a religious tradition of Québec. It was nevertheless rarer in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region in the mid-20th century.
The heritage value of the Curé-Alexandre-Bouillon mausoleum also lies in its architectural interest. The small stone building is typical of the small devotional buildings constructed in Catholic cemeteries in Québec in the mid-20th century. The mausoleum stands at the edge of the Saint-Edmond-de-Lac-au-Saumon Catholic cemetery and faces rue de l’Oratoire. It has a nave on a rectangular plan, a tall volume and a flat chevet, and is topped with a steep, straight gable roof. The building’s ornamentation is notable for its sobriety. It is limited to a pointed-arch-shaped verge on the façade, wide casings and a stone lintel above the door. A grille with pointed-arch motifs, crosses and ironwork decorate the double wooden door. A spire ending in a cross surmounts the ridge.
The heritage value of the Curé-Alexandre-Bouillon mausoleum further lies in its landscape interest. The mausoleum occupies an important location in the heart of the religious core of Lac-au-Saumon. It is erected in the parish cemetery, near the oratoire Saint-Joseph, a small chapel built in 1929 at the initiative of Father Bouillon. He himself chose this site, on a promontory at the rear of the cemetery. The priest was fond of the spot for its scenic qualities, sheltered by tall trees and overlooking the lake. His parishioners thus chose to erect the mausoleum near the oratoire Saint-Joseph to pay tribute to him and perpetuate his memory. The site of the mausoleum and the Saint-Joseph chapel is therefore distinguished by its scenic qualities and by its association with Alexandre Bouillon.
