Chrétien House

Chrétien House, classified in 1971, is a former farmhouse of French inspiration built in the second half of the 18th century. The rectangular stone residence, one and a half storeys high, is topped by a steep gable roof with straight slopes pierced near the centre by a large chimney stack. A lean-to annex, also of stone, abuts the east gable wall. Chrétien House is located on former farmland in the municipality of Saint-François-de-l’Île-d’Orléans.

Chrétien House is included in the Île-d’Orléans historic district.

The heritage value of Chrétien House lies in its architectural interest. The residence is representative of the rural house of French inspiration. This type stems from French models and know-how, adapted to particular local conditions such as climate and the availability of materials. Chrétien House, probably built in the second half of the 18th century, illustrates it notably through its stone masonry main dwelling, its minimal clearance above the ground, its steep gable roof with straight slopes covered with cedar shingles, the asymmetrical arrangement of its openings and its few small casement windows with small panes. The lean-to annex, also of stone, abuts the gable wall, a common arrangement in traditional rural architecture. In addition, the central chimney stack is a feature frequently found in the Québec City region and neighbouring regions, often indicating a lengthwise enlargement of the dwelling.
