Barachois-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site
The Barachois-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site, constituted in 1991, is a residential urban area. It consists of seven buildings probably built between the end of the 19th century and the end of the following century. The dwellings are built with a shallow setback from the public road and have simple square or rectangular plans of one to two storeys. They are topped by straight-pitched gable roofs or hipped roofs. Some have a covered gallery across the facade. The designation also includes the lots and outbuildings. The rectangular perimeter of the site is bounded on the north by boulevard de la Grande-Baie Sud and on the west and south by rue Coulombe. The Barachois-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site lies on the shore of the baie des Ha! Ha!, in the La Baie borough of the city of Saguenay.
The heritage value of the Barachois-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site lies in its representativeness of the evolution of the region’s urbanized landscape since the turn of the 20th century. The site is located on the shore of the baie des Ha! Ha!, on land overlooking it, and its built fabric is diverse. The residences near the water enjoy interesting views of the natural setting. They are built with a shallow setback from the public road, on often narrow lots. In addition, the houses on the site reflect the influence of industrial vernacular architecture. Since the end of the 19th century, domestic architecture has gradually become industrialized. Indeed, the arrival on the market of materials and prefabricated components sold by catalogue promoted its spread. The oldest dwellings display features common to this type of building. They adopt a simple rectangular plan of one or two storeys, are topped by a straight-pitched gable roof often pierced by dormers and have plain ornamentation. A covered gallery runs along the facade of several of them. During the 20th century, these residences were altered to meet new needs. They were often enlarged by the addition of a storey or an annex. The use of new materials and different window shapes reflects the changes made to residential architecture. The Barachois-de-Grande-Baie Heritage Site reflects the evolution of urban landscapes throughout the 20th century.
