7570, 1ière Avenue

The residence at 7570, 1ère Avenue, a cited historic monument, is an imposing foursquare house built around 1929. Square in plan, this two-storey brick residence is topped with a hip roof covered with sheet metal laid in the Canadian manner. A gallery sheltered by a sun canopy runs across the front façade and continues along the south side façade. The house is set back from an old thoroughfare, on a lot with abundant vegetation. It is located near the Charlesbourg historic district, in the village core of the Charlesbourg borough of the city of Québec.

The heritage value of the residence at 7570, 1ière Avenue lies in its representativeness of a type of domestic architecture, the foursquare house. These houses were built in Québec from the late 19th century until the first half of the 20th century. This residential model, which originated in the United States, is commonly called the Foursquare. Developed around 1890, it was intended mainly for the suburban middle class. Its popularity is explained by its simple, unadorned volume, which contrasted with the Victorian architecture of the late 19th century, and by its affordability. Indeed, foursquare house models were circulated notably in architectural catalogues. In addition, the market offered inexpensive standard materials, some of them available by catalogue, notably doors and windows. The residence on 1ière Avenue belongs to this architectural model by virtue of, among other things, its two-storey cubic volume, its low hip roof with overhanging eaves, its brick cladding and its gallery covered with a sun canopy, which extends across the façade and along one side wall of the ground floor. A true symbol of comfort, the gallery is the main ornament, with its classically styled wooden posts and the turned balusters of its railing. Located in the village core of Charlesbourg, the residence still retains all of its original architectural components and bears witness to the vogue the foursquare house enjoyed in Québec.
