Saint-Fabien Old Theatre

The Saint-Fabien old theatre, a cited historic monument, is a community building constructed around 1930. The building, on a rectangular plan, rises one storey at the front and two and a half storeys at the rear. It is clad in asbestos shingles and topped with a straight gable roof. It stands near a Catholic institutional ensemble comprising a church, a presbytery and a cemetery. The Saint-Fabien old theatre is set along the public road on sloping land, in the village core of the municipality of Saint-Fabien.

The heritage value of the Saint-Fabien old theatre lies in the importance of its community and cultural functions. Québec Catholic institutional ensembles usually include a church, a presbytery and a cemetery. Other facilities, including a parish hall, are sometimes added to these components. This type of building often fulfils several functions in rural localities. The parish hall, which became the Saint-Fabien old theatre, served as a meeting place for the people of Saint-Fabien. It hosted various recreational activities and events, such as film screenings organized by local community organizations. After a few years of abandonment, the building was converted into a summer theatre in the mid-1990s. Since then, it has hosted theatrical performances as well as shows by singer-songwriters, musicians and comedians. The Saint-Fabien old theatre thus remains an important venue for cultural presentation for the locality and the surrounding area.

The heritage value of the Saint-Fabien old theatre also lies in its architectural interest. The building is a good example of industrial vernacular architecture. This type appeared when architecture became industrialized, notably with the arrival on the market of prefabricated materials and components offered by catalogue. This architecture appeared in Canada at the end of the 19th century and spread during the first half of the following century. Buildings of this type are characterized in particular by the simplicity of their volumes and the standardization of materials. Built around 1930, the Saint-Fabien old theatre belongs to this industrial vernacular architecture, notably through its rectangular plan, its asbestos shingle cladding, its straight gable roof and its rectangular openings. The façade set on the gable wall, the corner boards, the oculus and the Canadian-style sheet-metal roofing, for their part, show the persistence of more traditional forms and materials. The Saint-Fabien old theatre thus bears witness to the coexistence of industrial and traditional elements in buildings erected in rural areas in the early 20th century.
