Samuel-Bédard House
The Samuel-Bédard House, a recognized historic monument, is a modest settler’s dwelling erected in 1903. It consists of two adjoining wooden buildings: a house and a shed. The rectangular, one-and-a-half-storey main dwelling is topped by a straight-pitched gable roof and has a lean-to at the rear. The large rectangular shed is topped by a hip roof. The Samuel-Bédard House stands on a large open lot in the municipality of Péribonka.
The heritage value of the Samuel-Bédard House lies in its association with the writer Louis Hémon (1880-1913). A sports columnist and author of short stories and novels, Hémon was born in Brest (France) and met a tragic end when he was struck by a train at Chapleau (Ontario). The writer, of adventurous temperament, came to Canada in 1911 and went to Péribonka the following year. During his stay in this locality, where he worked as a farmhand, he gathered material and wrote the novel “Maria Chapdelaine” while living in the lean-to and the attic of the Samuel-Bédard House. The story was first published posthumously as a serial in the French newspaper “Le Temps” in 1914, and then as a book in Montréal in 1916. Frequently reissued and translated into several languages, this novel, one of the major works of Québec literature of the first half of the 20th century, did much to make Québec known in France and abroad.
The heritage value of the Samuel-Bédard House also lies in its representativeness as a settler’s house. In the 19th century, part of Québec’s population was forced to emigrate to the United States, as the good land of the St. Lawrence Valley had all been taken up. To counter emigration, new territories were opened, including Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. This dwelling illustrates the settlers’ houses built in this region at the turn of the 20th century through its simple volume, its wooden structure, its straight-pitched gable roof, its low foundation and its spare ornamentation.
