Former Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc Mill
The former Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc mill, a classified historic monument, is a rectangular building, two and a half storeys high, topped by a straight-pitched roof. It was built in 1938 and is located in the municipality of Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc, on the bank of the Petite rivière Péribonka, in the heart of the village core.
The heritage value of the former Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc mill lies in its representativeness. In an economic setting combining agriculture and logging, such as Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean in the early 20th century, the mill was an important community facility. It made it possible to carry out most tasks requiring a certain degree of mechanization, in addition to producing hydroelectric power and providing a number of jobs. Small settlements grew up spontaneously around mills. Very few mills like the one in Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc survive today in the Lac-Saint-Jean area.
The heritage value of the former Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc mill also lies in its historical interest. In a region that developed late, the settlement of the municipality of Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc began with the construction of a first mill by William Tremblay in the early 20th century. The settlement core formed around this facility.
The heritage value of the former Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc mill further lies in its educational value. Acquired by the corporation of the village of Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc, it is open to the public. It evokes the beginnings of settlement in the region and allows visitors to become familiar with certain traditional techniques, such as grinding grain, carding wool and sawing wood.
