Rivière-Blanche Railway Station
Rivière-Blanche Railway Station, a recognized historic monument, is a one-storey railway station with a rectangular plan, topped with a hip roof with projecting eaves. The station, built between 1908 and 1910, is now located in the municipality of Mont-Joli.
The heritage value of Rivière-Blanche Railway Station lies first in the history of rail transportation in eastern Québec. At the beginning of the 20th century, this region was not served by any rail link. It was therefore relatively isolated during the winter, which slowed its development. The Mont-Joli-Matane railway line, operated by the private Canada Gulf and Terminal Railway company, was inaugurated in 1910. It was the first section of a line that was to reach Gaspé. Since service on this line ended in 1978, the stations and shelters have been destroyed. Rivière-Blanche Railway Station is the last witness of these railway activities.
The heritage value of Rivière-Blanche Railway Station also lies in its representativeness in the typology of railway stations. It is an example of the small and medium-sized stations characterized by their simple one- or one-and-a-half-storey volume, their hip roof without dormers, their sometimes overhanging eaves and their wood cladding. Very few examples remain of these stations, which were found throughout Québec at the beginning of the 20th century. The Rivière-Blanche station, carefully designed, is in an excellent state of preservation.
