Cabano Railway Station

Cabano Railway Station, a cited historic monument, is a railway station built around 1889. The two-storey wooden building, rectangular in plan, is topped with a hip roof pierced with dormers. The main facade has two doors placed on either side of a bay window. The station stands alongside a cycling path in the town of Cabano.

The heritage value of Cabano Railway Station lies in its historical interest. It recalls the importance of the railway in the economic growth of Cabano and the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. During the 19th century, the forest industry developed rapidly in the region. Business promoters benefited from government subsidies and loan guarantees for the establishment of railways. The settlement of less accessible regions thus became possible. In 1883, English-Canadian businessmen and French-speaking Québec leaders founded the St. Lawrence and Temiscouata Railway company. They proposed building a railway linking the town of Edmundston, New Brunswick, to Fraserville (Rivière-du-Loup). With more than one million dollars in subsidies, the desired section was built in less than two years. It fostered settlement and economic development in the interior of the Bas-Saint-Laurent. The railway reached Cabano in 1889 and was immediately put into service; the station was built around 1889. Cabano Railway Station was a place of transit and transshipment for a variety of goods and contributed to the growth of the village.

The heritage value of Cabano Railway Station also lies in its architectural interest. It stands out from the standard models while possessing some architectural elements typical of this kind of building. Its two storeys, its imposing volume and the absence of an exterior shelter set it apart from other stations. It nevertheless features the overhanging hip roof, the canopies over the entrances supported by wooden brackets, and a bay window. The latter is an architectural element very widespread in North American stations after 1880. It allowed the operator to watch both the track and the surroundings, contributing to the efficiency and safety of the premises. Cabano Railway Station is the only railway station along the former line linking Rivière-du-Loup to Edmundston that retains its original appearance.
