1983, rue Bagot

1983, rue Bagot, a cited historic monument, is a residence built at the end of the 19th century and enlarged in the first half of the 20th century. Rectangular in plan and one and a half storeys high, the house is topped by a gable roof with flared eaves pierced by dormers. A covered gallery wraps around two sides of the building. A rectangular one-and-a-half-storey annex is set against the right gable wall. The house stands at the edge of the public road, on landscaped grounds, in the La Baie borough of the city of Saguenay.

The heritage value of 1983, rue Bagot lies in its representativeness as a vernacular dwelling. So-called vernacular architecture is architecture specific to a region, built from available local resources and perpetuating traditional building methods. At the time of its construction, at the end of the 19th century, 1983, rue Bagot stood in a rural area. The dwelling is characteristic of vernacular architecture in its modest main block, gable roof with flared eaves, wood shingle cladding, symmetrically arranged openings on the facade, simple lines and lack of ornamentation. The enlargement of the building through the construction, against one of the gable walls, of an annex lower than the main body of the house reflects a common practice in rural areas. The residence thus bears witness to the persistence of certain traditional models in late 19th-century Québec residential architecture.

1983, rue Bagot
