Health Care Centre

The Health Care Centre is a modern nine-storey, brick building with a curved penthouse, flat roofs, and a large concrete entrance portico. Built between 1960 and 1961 using a cruciform plan, the building’s four wings radiate outward from a central core and feature punched window openings, and end curtain walls. The Health Care Centre is located in eastern Ottawa, in an area characterized by several important medical complexes. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Historical value:

The Health Care Centre is the first and most comprehensive manifestation of the centralization and unification of the medical services in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1959. The construction of the Health Care Centre was instrumental in establishing this area in Ottawa as a medical campus and hospital complex.

Architectural value:

A large, modern building, the Health Care Centre was designed to be a state-of-the-art facility that could accommodate a complex functional program and optimize efficiency. The scale of the hospital made it one of the largest projects handled by the firm of Govan, Fergusson, Lindsay, Kaminker, Langley and Keenleyside Architects, incorporating leading edge concepts of privacy, communication and safety, as well as the latest systems and technology.

Environmental value:

The Health Care Centre is well known as the National Defence Medical Centre and as the hospital serving political VIPs within the city and the regional community. The institutional character of the building as a monolithic form in the landscape has been retained despite the removal of convalescent pavilion.

Le Centre de soins de santé est un bâtiment moderne en brique de neuf étages, avec une construction en «penthouse» arrondie, des toits plats et un grand portique d’entrée en béton. Construit entre 1960 et 1961 selon un plan cruciforme, les quatre ailes du bâtiment se dégagent d’un noyau central et présentent des fenêtres ainsi qu’à leur extrémité des murs-rideaux. Le Centre de soins de santé est situé à l’est d’Ottawa, dans un secteur caractérisé par la présence de plusieurs complexes médicaux importants. La désignation se limite au tracé au sol du bâtiment.

Le Centre de soins de santé est un édifice fédéral du patrimoine reconnu en raison de son importance historique et de ses valeurs architecturale et environnementale.

Valeur historique :

Le Centre de soins de santé est la première et la plus complète manifestation de la centralisation et de l’unification des services de santé des Forces armées canadiennes en 1959. La construction du Centre de soins de santé a joué un rôle décisif dans l’attribution du rôle de complexe médical et hospitalier à ce secteur d’Ottawa.

Valeur architecturale :

Le Centre de soins de santé, un grand bâtiment moderne, a été conçu pour être une installation à la fine pointe du progrès, pouvant répondre aux exigences d’un programme fonctionnel complexe et optimiser l’efficacité. De par son envergure, l’hôpital constitue l’un des plus grands projets du cabinet d’architectes Govan, Fergusson, Lindsay, Kaminker, Langley et Keenleyside, dans lequel ces derniers ont incorporé des concepts novateurs d’intimité, de communication et de sécurité ainsi que des technologies et des systèmes des plus avancés.

Valeur environnementale :

L’hôpital est bien connu comme le Centre de soins de santé de la Défense nationale et comme l’hôpital où sont soignées les personnalités politiques de la ville et de la région. Le caractère institutionnel du bâtiment, en tant que forme monolithique dans le paysage, a été préservé malgré la disparition du pavillon de convalescence.
