Tilson Barn
The Tilson barn is a simple rectangular gable-roofed structure, with a shed roof addition on the west side. It is situated with its gable end facing and close to a quiet country road, in a context of other buildings of similar character and agricultural fields.
The Tilson barn has historical significance as the oldest surviving barn in Richmond and a landmark in the South Arm Slough District. Originally used for dairy cows and as a hayloft, the barn was built for Hudson Tilson and helps to maintain the historic agricultural character of the South Arm farming area. When permanent dykes were constructed around Lulu Island in the early 1900s, the southern end of the barn was rebuilt and cut at an angle to accommodate it, which gives the barn an historical association with the development of the dyking and drainage system that was necessary before farm production could begin in this area.
Grange Tilson
La grange Tilson est une structure rectangulaire simple à toit à pignon, dotée d’un agrandissement à toit en appentis du côté ouest. Son pignon fait face à un chemin de campagne tranquille, dont elle est proche, dans un contexte d’autres bâtiments de caractère semblable et de champs agricoles.
La grange Tilson a une importance historique en tant que plus ancienne grange subsistante à Richmond et point de repère dans le district des marécages du bras Sud (South Arm Slough District). Utilisée à l’origine pour les vaches laitières et comme fenil, la grange a été construite pour Hudson Tilson et contribue à préserver le caractère agricole historique du secteur agricole du bras Sud. Lorsque des digues permanentes ont été construites autour de l’île Lulu au début des années 1900, l’extrémité sud de la grange a été reconstruite et coupée en biais pour s’y adapter, ce qui confère à la grange une association historique avec le développement du réseau d’endiguement et de drainage qui devait être en place avant que la production agricole puisse commencer dans ce secteur.
