Canadian Bank of Commerce

Between 1905 and 1910, the Canadian Bank of Commerce used prefabricated buildings designed by Darling and Pearson to attain a competitive edge in the race to open new branches on the prairies. Commissioned by the bank, the B.C. Mills, Timber & Trading Company of Vancouver, using a patented sectional wall system, manufactured the buildings. Shipped by rail in dismantled kit form, they could be quickly assembled as branch banks at new townsites. The 1906 Watson branch is typical of the classical bank design which, as a result of this initiative, became a familiar western canadian landmark.
