Shaw Residence – Nanaimo (815 Fitzwilliam Street)
The Shaw Residence is a one and one half storey, Edwardian building located on the main street of one of Nanaimo’s oldest neighbourhoods. The historic place is confined to the building footprint.
The Shaw Residence is a good example of a building that takes full advantage of its hillside site. Located at the crest of a long, gentle slope that rises from the harbour, the building’s east facing windows provide views of the harbour and distant mountains while the front entry faces a less attractive view of the street.
Built in 1910-11, the Shaw Residence is a very good example of a modest Craftsman style bungalow. Long and low in form, this simple building features a few decorative elements typical of the Craftsman style including a stained glass panel in the second floor window, triangular brackets under the porch roof and double-hung wooden sash windows.
The Shaw Residence is part of a significant cluster of exceptionally intact and well maintained historic buildings in this neighbourhood.

La résidence Shaw est un bâtiment édouardien d’un étage et demi situé sur la rue principale de l’un des plus anciens quartiers de Nanaimo. Le lieu patrimonial se limite à l’empreinte au sol du bâtiment.
La résidence Shaw est un bon exemple de bâtiment qui tire pleinement parti de son emplacement à flanc de colline. Située au sommet d’une longue pente douce qui s’élève depuis le port, ses fenêtres orientées vers l’est offrent des vues sur le port et les montagnes au loin, tandis que l’entrée principale fait face à une vue moins attrayante sur la rue.
Construite en 1910-1911, la résidence Shaw est un très bon exemple de modeste bungalow de style Craftsman. De forme allongée et basse, ce bâtiment simple présente quelques éléments décoratifs typiques du style Craftsman, notamment un panneau de vitrail dans la fenêtre du deuxième étage, des consoles triangulaires sous le toit du porche et des fenêtres à guillotine double en bois.
La résidence Shaw fait partie d’un important groupe de bâtiments historiques exceptionnellement intacts et bien entretenus de ce quartier.
