Mainstreet Building
The Mainstreet Building is a two-storey brick Edwardian Classical Revival style commercial building located on the west side of the main commercial street in Ladysmith, British Columbia. The historic place is confined to the building footprint.
Built in 1922, the Mainstreet Building is an excellent example of an Edwardian Classical Revival style commercial building. The building’s symmetrical façade, pilasters, and highly decorative capitals are all typical elements of this style. The building also features exceptional multi-coloured decorative brickwork.
The Mainstreet Building is part of a grouping of largely intact historic buildings in Ladysmith’s commercial core. Situated mid-block, the building is part of an almost continuous city block of similarly proportioned historic buildings that collectively create a cohesive streetscape.
The Mainstreet Building has been in continuous use as a commercial building since its construction. Although the building is among the youngest on this city block, it speaks to the ongoing commercial development of the area and contributes to the heritage character of the area.
Édifice Mainstreet
L’édifice Mainstreet est un bâtiment commercial en brique de deux étages, de style néoclassique édouardien, situé du côté ouest de la principale rue commerçante de Ladysmith, en Colombie-Britannique. Le lieu historique se limite à l’empreinte du bâtiment.
Construit en 1922, l’édifice Mainstreet est un excellent exemple de bâtiment commercial de style néoclassique édouardien. La façade symétrique, les pilastres et les chapiteaux très décoratifs du bâtiment sont tous des éléments typiques de ce style. Le bâtiment présente aussi un exceptionnel appareil décoratif de briques multicolores.
L’édifice Mainstreet fait partie d’un ensemble de bâtiments historiques en grande partie intacts du noyau commercial de Ladysmith. Situé au milieu de l’îlot, le bâtiment fait partie d’un îlot urbain presque continu de bâtiments historiques aux proportions semblables qui, ensemble, créent un paysage de rue cohérent.
L’édifice Mainstreet est utilisé sans interruption comme bâtiment commercial depuis sa construction. Bien qu’il soit parmi les plus récents de cet îlot, le bâtiment témoigne du développement commercial continu du secteur et contribue au caractère patrimonial de celui-ci.
