530 First Avenue Building
The 530 First Avenue Building is a small Boomtown style building located on the west side of the main commercial street in Ladysmith, British Columbia. The historic place is confined to the building footprint.
Built around 1900, the 530 First Avenue Building is an excellent example of a simple vernacular Boomtown or false-front style structure. Until the erection of more sophisticated brick buildings in this area over the next few decades, Ladysmith’s first commercial buildings were typically wood framed and clad, and false-fronted. Boomtown fronts made buildings appear more substantial and provided a convenient area for signage, while large windows at the ground level provided space for the display of goods. This otherwise modest building is embellished by a relatively ornate cornice.
The one-storey 530 First Avenue Building stands out as the smallest building on this city block. Shorter and narrower than any of its neighbours, the building contributes significant visual interest for its unique scale and style. Several similar buildings are scattered throughout the commercial area, although this is the only one on this particular block.
Symbolizing Ladysmith’s very earliest commercial development, the 530 First Avenue Building has been in continuous use for over a century and adds significantly to the heritage character of the street.

Construit vers 1900, l’édifice du 530, First Avenue est un excellent exemple de structure vernaculaire simple de style boomtown, ou à fausse façade. Jusqu’à l’érection, au cours des décennies suivantes, de bâtiments en brique plus raffinés dans ce secteur, les premiers bâtiments commerciaux de Ladysmith étaient généralement à ossature et à revêtement de bois, et dotés d’une fausse façade. Les façades boomtown donnaient aux bâtiments une apparence plus imposante et offraient un espace commode pour l’affichage, tandis que de grandes fenêtres au rez-de-chaussée permettaient d’exposer les marchandises. Ce bâtiment par ailleurs modeste est agrémenté d’une corniche relativement ornée.
L’édifice d’un étage du 530, First Avenue se démarque comme le plus petit bâtiment de cet îlot. Plus bas et plus étroit que tous ses voisins, le bâtiment suscite un intérêt visuel important par son échelle et son style uniques. Plusieurs bâtiments semblables sont dispersés dans le secteur commercial, mais celui-ci est le seul dans cet îlot en particulier.
Symbole des tout premiers développements commerciaux de Ladysmith, l’édifice du 530, First Avenue est utilisé sans interruption depuis plus d’un siècle et contribue de façon importante au caractère patrimonial de la rue.
