Rogers Pass

Following the decision of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1881 to adopt the southerly route through the Rockies at Kicking Horse Pass, it became necessary to find a way through the difficult and largely unexplored Selkirks. A. B. Rogers traversed this pass the next year and so overcame the last great geographical obstacle facing the railway. The steep grade and susceptibility to avalanches made the pass a treacherous part of the line and it was bypassed in 1916 by the connaught Tunnel. With the inauguration of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1962, however, it again formed part of a national route.

Col Rogers
